Phantom Orchard
Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori
The Registry Theatre |122 Frederick Street in Kitchener
Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori both hail from New York’s “downtown” music scene, where they have been active for many years in both their own projects as well as collaborations with the likes of John Zorn, Fred Frith, and other notables.
Multi-instrumentalist Zeena Parkins is perhaps best known for her work with the harp which, in her hands, is transformed and extended far beyond normal harp territory through the use of unusual playing techniques, novel use of household objects, and layers of analogue and digital processing.
Ikue Mori began her career as a drummer in New York’s “No Wave” scene, and has since been moving in improv and experimental circles using drum machines and, most recently, laptop.
Their collaboration Phantom Orchard features a mix of Zeena Parkins’ multi-faceted acoustic playing filtered through the kaleidoscopic lens of Ikue Mori’s processing techniques. The results range from contemplative to disorienting, mysterious to playful.
