Liebes-Lied/Love Song
Hildegard Westerkamp and Anne Bourne

Kitchener City Hall Rotunda | 200 King Street West in Kitchener

The two artists on this programme come from different backgrounds but are joinedby a common interest in listening and the environment. The featured work in thisconcert will be the presentation of a new collaborative piece by electroacousticcomposer and sound-ecologist HildegardWesterkamp (Vancouver) and composer/improviserAnne Bourne (Toronto).

The piece, Liebes Lied/Love Song, is a meditation on Love in all its forms, and takes the Rilke poem of the same name as its starting point. Readings of the text in German and in a new English translation by Vancouver writer Norbert Ruebsaat, environmental recordings from both Germany and Canada combine with recordings of Anne’s improvised explorations to create the soundscape of the piece.  Over this Anne performs a partially open score that blends notated music (drawn from the recorded improvisations) with freer improvised sections. The piece uses the resulting dialogue between recorded/live and composed/ improvised to explore the meanings of the poem.
